Brussels, 26 September (LaPresse) – "The repeated violations of our airspace are unacceptable. The message is clear: Russia is testing the EU and NATO. And our response must be firm, united and immediate. At today's meeting, we agreed to move from the initial idea to concrete actions. We agreed on the most important point: surveillance of the eastern flank, with the “drone wall” at its centre, will serve the whole of Europe." This was stated by EU Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius in a press briefing at the end of the meeting with the defence ministers of the Member States involved in the “drone wall” project. Together with our partners on the front line and Ukraine's valuable experience, we have reached a shared understanding on its design: a “drone wall” with immediate priority, with advanced detection, tracking and interception capabilities; land defences, such as anti-mobility systems; maritime security for the Baltic and Black Seas; space-based situational awareness," he explains. ‘The next steps are clear: I will secure political backing ahead of the October European Council. We will define a detailed technical roadmap with national experts. We will mobilise the European defence industry. And we will create a comprehensive package of EU financial instruments to make this shield a reality. Today's meeting was a milestone: now we focus on delivery,’ the Commissioner emphasises.
