Flotilla, Delia: "The government interfered, no progress with them"

Rome, September 29 (LaPresse) – The government "has so far limited itself to reiterating proposals it has already made, which we have already rejected. The government has seized upon a channel that was being explored with Cardinal Pizzaballa, leading him down different paths," said Maria Elena Delia, Italian spokesperson for the Global Sumud Flotilla, in an interview with Repubblica. "They have a distribution network in the Strip, which seemed to us to be the most capable of ensuring that aid actually reaches the people of Gaza, breaking the blockade imposed by Israel," she added. With the Vatican, she explained, "nothing is currently fixed. But contact with those on board is ongoing, and they have always been open and available." When asked about the center-right's view of this as an operation against the prime minister, Delia replied: "It's an international movement. There are people from 44 countries on board. I doubt they have any interest in the fate of the Meloni government. We, Italians included, are interested in Palestine and Gaza. If the Meloni government finds itself in opposition to the objectives of the Global Sumud Flotilla and the sentiment of much of Italy, it's certainly not our responsibility." Those on board, he assured, are aware of the risks they face: "It's been taken into account," he emphasized. "We still trust that someone will tell Israel that this is a peaceful mission and must be treated as such."
