Brussels, 7 October (LaPresse) – By a narrow margin, the European Parliament has decided to defend the immunity of Avs MEP Ilaria Salis, rejecting the Hungarian authorities' request for its waiver. The European Parliament therefore approved the position of the European Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee (JURI), which had decided not to waive Ilaria Salis' immunity. Of the 628 voters, 306 voted in favour, 305 against and 17 abstained. The vote was secret, as requested by the entire centre-left, and by simple majority. Salis is accused by the Hungarian authorities of participating in the assault of two neo-Nazi activists in February 2023 during a counter-demonstration on Honour Day, a historical re-enactment paying tribute to pro-Nazi fighters and militants. She spent 15 months in prison in Budapest.
