Almasri case, ICC: ‘Italy has failed to fulfil its obligations’

Rome, 18 October (LaPresse) – Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court has found that Italy ‘has failed to fulfil its obligations’ under the Rome Statute in relation to the Almasri case. "By failing to properly execute the Court's request to arrest and surrender Mr Almasri Njeem while he was on Italian territory, and by failing to consult and cooperate with the Court to resolve any issues arising from the formulation of the arrest warrant and the alleged competing extradition request, Italy has failed to fulfil its obligations under the Statute, and this failure has prevented the Court from exercising the functions and powers conferred on it by the Statute," reads the decision adopted by Pre-Trial Chamber I of the ICC.
