Paris (France), 22 October (LaPresse/AP) – The director of the Louvre, Laurence des Cars, admitted to a ‘terrible failure’ in her testimony to the Senate in Paris after the astonishing theft of jewellery on Sunday in broad daylight from the world's most visited museum. The Louvre reopened its doors this morning, welcoming long lines of visitors under its iconic glass pyramid for the first time since one of the most sensational thefts of the century. Laurence des Cars said the museum had a serious lack of security cameras outside the monument and spoke of other ‘weaknesses’ highlighted by Sunday's theft. Under intense pressure over a theft that has tarnished France's image worldwide, she told a Senate committee that she had tendered her resignation, but that the Culture Minister had refused to accept it.
