Japan: Trial begins for the murder of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe

Tokyo (Japan), 28 October (LaPresse/AP) – The trial has begun in Japan for the murder of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was killed on 8 July 2022. The defendant, 45-year-old Tetsuya Yamagami, appeared in court and, according to broadcaster NHK, pleaded guilty to the charges read by prosecutors. Yamagami, who appeared in court wearing a black T-shirt and grey trousers, with his long hair tied back in a ponytail, allegedly shot Abe with a homemade firearm during an election speech. The motive was reportedly his resentment towards Abe and other Japanese politicians for their alleged ties to the Unification Church. Yamagami claimed that his mother's large donations to the church, founded in South Korea a year after the end of the Korean War in 1953, caused his family's financial collapse.
