Migrants, UN: ‘Over 1,000 victims in the central Mediterranean since the beginning of the year’

Rome, 12 November (LaPresse) – According to the latest data from the ‘Missing Migrants’ project of the IOM, the International Organisation for Migration, the death toll in the central Mediterranean has exceeded 1,000 since the beginning of the year. The organisation announced this in a statement in which it reported on the latest shipwreck, in which 42 people are believed to be missing. According to the IOM, there is an ‘urgent need for enhanced regional cooperation, expanded safe and regular migration routes, and more effective search and rescue operations to prevent further loss of life’.
