Santiago (Chile), Nov. 17 (LaPresse) – The runoff on December 14 will determine who will be the next president of Chile. Following the first round, neither of the two candidates surpassed the 50% threshold of support. As the share of counted ballots nears 100%, Jeannette Jara (former Labour Minister and center-left candidate) is ahead with 26.8%, while José Antonio Kast (right-wing) is close to 24%. “These will be the most important elections of our generation, a real referendum between two models of society: the current one, which has brought Chile to destruction, stagnation, violence and hatred, and our model, which promotes freedom, hope and progress,” commented Kast, who hopes to rally all right-wing forces ahead of the runoff.
Jara, for her part, addressed an appeal to voters: “This is a great country,” she said, “do not let fear freeze your heart.”
