Washington (USA), 28 November (LaPresse) – Donald Trump intends to ‘put immigration from poorer countries on hold indefinitely’ and promises to expel millions of immigrants from the United States by revoking their legal status. The president blames immigrants for problems ranging from crime to housing shortages, as part of the ‘social dysfunction’ he believes America suffers from, and calls for ‘reverse migration’. The US president's harshest post against immigration on social media since he returned to the White House in January came after Wednesday's shooting of two National Guard members who were patrolling the streets of Washington. One of the two soldiers died and the other is in critical condition. The shooter is a 29-year-old Afghan citizen who collaborated with the CIA during the war in Afghanistan. The suspect arrived in the United States as part of a resettlement programme for those who had helped American troops after their withdrawal from the country. Following the shooting, which took place not far from the White House, the administration intends to review the situation of millions of legal immigrants, continuing a 10-month campaign to reduce the immigrant population. In a lengthy social media post published on Thursday evening, the Republican president claimed that millions of people born outside the United States and now residing in the country are largely responsible for America's social ills. ‘Only reverse migration can completely solve this situation,’ Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. ‘Other than that, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, except those who hate, steal, kill and destroy everything America stands for – You won't be here long!’ the president wrote.
