Oslo, Dec. 10 (LaPresse) – The Nobel Peace Prize winner, Venezuelan Maria Corina Machado, will not attend the award ceremony taking place today in Oslo, Norway. This was stated to broadcaster NRK by the director of the Nobel Institute, Kristian Berg Harpviken: “Unfortunately, she is not currently in Norway. And she will not go on stage at Oslo City Hall at 1 p.m. today, when the ceremony begins.” Machado’s daughter, Ana Corina Sosa, will receive the prize on her behalf. Machado heads the opposition to Nicolás Maduro’s regime in Venezuela and has been living in a secret location since last year’s elections. “She is simply living under a death threat from the regime. This threat also applies when she is abroad, both from the regime and its allies around the world,” Harpviken explained, emphasizing that, for logistical reasons, it would have been even more challenging than expected to bring Machado to Norway safely.
