Washington (USA), 19 Dec. (LaPresse/AP) – US President Donald Trump has suspended the green card lottery programme, which allowed the suspect in the Brown University and MIT shootings to enter the United States. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a post on X that, on Trump's orders, she is directing U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to suspend the programme. ‘This heinous individual should never have been allowed to enter our country,’ she said. The diversity visa programme makes up to 50,000 green cards available each year through a lottery for people from countries underrepresented in the United States, many of which are in Africa. Nearly 20 million people applied for the 2025 visa lottery, with over 131,000 selected, including spouses among the winners. After winning, they must undergo a background check to gain admission to the United States. Portuguese citizens won only 38 places.
