Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), 25 Dec. (LaPresse) – Five people died after a helicopter crashed on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The accident occurred on Wednesday evening on one of the most popular tourist climbing routes, in what police described as a rescue mission to recover tourists in distress. Among the victims are two foreigners, whom police said were recovered during the rescue operation, a local doctor, a tour guide and the pilot. All died in the accident, which occurred between Barafu Camp and the summit of Kibo, at an altitude of over 4,000 metres. Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander Simon Maigwa said the aircraft belonged to Kilimanjaro Aviation, which provides medical rescue services, among others. The Tanzanian Civil Aviation Authority announced that an investigation has been launched “to determine the circumstances and probable cause” of the accident. Air accidents on Mount Kilimanjaro are rare. The last one occurred in November 2008, when four people died.
