EU-US, Berlin: “Transatlantic relations are disintegrating”

Berlin (Germany), 14 Jan. (LaPresse) – German Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil believes that relations with the United States are now seriously compromised. “The transatlantic alliance is undergoing a transformation far deeper than we may have been willing to admit so far,” Klingbeil said during an event at the German Institute for Economic Research in Berlin. “The transatlantic relationship as we knew it is disintegrating,” he added. Klingbeil referred to the US military intervention in Venezuela, stressing that the entry of US forces into the country and the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro, in violation of international law under the administration of President Donald Trump, cannot be considered an isolated case. “The Trump administration has made clear that it wants to dominate the Western Hemisphere,” he said. Under Trump, added the Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister, “the US administration is moving politically and culturally away from Europe in an increasingly marked way.” An attitude that, according to Klingbeil, also emerges from Trump’s behavior regarding Greenland and from the new US national security strategy. “The strategy and actions adopted could almost be read as a declaration of hostility toward the European Union and our liberal and democratic order,” he concluded.
