Greenland, von der Leyen: "Respect its will, it can count on us"

Brussels, 14 Jan. (LaPresse) – “For me, it is important that Greenlanders know, and know in practice, not just in words, that we respect their wishes and interests and that they can count on us.” This is what European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at a press conference in Brussels.

“There is therefore much speculation about what should be done, what could be done, what might be done. I would like to set all that aside and focus on the general principle regarding Greenland that we are examining. What are the different debates? First of all, Greenland belongs to its people. So it is up to Denmark and Greenland, and only to them, to decide on matters that concern them. The agreement with Denmark – that is point number one. It is very important that we maintain constant contact with the Danish government, also to understand the needs and demands of the Greenlanders,” she explained.

“Secondly, Greenland is part of NATO, and when we talk about Arctic security, this is one of NATO’s central issues, and we know that the glue between allies is the fact that there is always a clear model – one for all, all for one,” she added. “Therefore, NATO is a unique forum to integrate the various interests present. But, of course, the Arctic and Arctic security are also matters that concern the European Union, without a doubt, and for years we have invested in our relationship with Greenland. I was there last year, before all this happened, to open the office in Nuuk, in order to have a constant channel of communication with the Greenlanders. We have an investment program. We have intensified our commitment compared to last year. We have accelerated our work so that there is a solid, good, and lasting relationship between the European Union and the Greenlanders, and for me it is important that Greenlanders know, and know in practice, not just in words, that we respect their wishes and their interests,” she concluded.
