Beijing, Jan 16 (LaPresse) – “The Chinese side firmly opposes countries that maintain diplomatic relations with China from negotiating and signing agreements with the Chinese region of Taiwan that have sovereign implications and are of an official nature.” This was stated by a spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Guo Jiakun, in response to a question about the trade agreement reached by the US and Taiwan. The spokesperson also urged the United States to strictly respect the “One China” principle and the three China-US joint communiqués. The agreement reached by the US and Taiwan provides for new investments of 250 billion dollars by Taiwanese semiconductor and tech companies in the United States. In exchange, the Trump administration will reduce tariffs on Taiwanese products. The Taiwan agreement is the latest reached by the Trump administration, after those with the EU and Japan, agreements that were negotiated following the US president’s presentation in April of last year of a radical tariff plan aimed at addressing what he viewed as trade imbalances.
