Haiti: Presidential Council dissolves ahead of elections

Port-au-Prince (Haiti), 7 February (LaPresse/AP) – Haiti's presidential council resigned today after nearly two years of tumultuous government alongside Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, the US-backed prime minister, who is expected to remain in power as the country prepares for its first general elections in a decade. A few days before the dissolution of the nine-member council, the United States deployed a warship and two US Coast Guard vessels to waters near Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince, which is 90% controlled by gangs. ‘We must put aside our personal interests and continue to move forward for security,’ said outgoing Council President Laurent Saint-Cyr, who rejected the call to dismiss the prime minister. Fils-Aimé spoke briefly, saying he would address the nation later in the day. ‘The Presidential Council has done its job by paving the way for governance that is attentive to security and electoral issues,’ he said.
