Ukraine, Sweden: "We support Kyiv's accession to NATO"

Brussels, Feb 22 (LaPresse) – "NATO's 'open door' policy is important. We continue to support Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership and the EU accession process." This is what Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard told LaPresse ahead of the fourth anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. "In the meantime, I would like to emphasize that NATO's support for Ukraine is unwavering," she added. "We hope that Ukraine will become an EU member as soon as conditions allow, and we welcome Ukraine's ambition to be technically ready for EU accession by 2027. Ukraine has made significant progress in reforms, despite Russia's large-scale invasion," the minister continued. Ukraine has long demonstrated its sincere desire to achieve a just and sustainable peace. Despite the peace efforts of Ukraine, Europe, and the United States, Russia is not showing a genuine desire for peace. Russian attacks continue against civilians and civilian infrastructure, including energy facilities. To change Russia's calculations and strengthen Ukraine's position, the EU must continue to provide substantial support to Ukraine and exert greater pressure on Russia," Stenergard concluded.
