This was reported by Pentagon officials in a closed-door briefing on Capitol Hill, according to the New York Times. The estimate does not include many of the costs associated with the operation, such as sending military equipment and personnel to the region in preparation for the first attacks. For this reason, the Times notes, lawmakers expect the figure to rise considerably as the Pentagon continues to calculate the costs accumulated in the first week alone.
