Frankfurt (Germany), 13 March (LaPresse) – “Six of the G7 members have made it very, very clear that they consider the lifting of sanctions against Russia to be a mistake, even if it is a temporary and short-term measure.” This was stated by German government spokesperson Sebastian Hille at a press conference, referring to a call between G7 leaders in which US President Donald Trump also participated. Hille explained that the issue had been discussed directly among the heads of state and government and that “six of the G7 members have stated very clearly that they consider it the wrong signal”. The spokesperson added that the US decision to temporarily suspend sanctions on Russian oil remains, however, “wrong” in the German government’s view. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reiterated this position during his visit to Norway: “We believe it is wrong to ease sanctions now, for whatever reason.” Berlin, on the other hand, insists on the need to maintain pressure on Moscow and to continue the ongoing negotiations within the European Union for a new package of sanctions.
