Ukraine, Berlin: ‘We have confidence in US support; the EU should be at the negotiating table’

Frankfurt (Germany), 18 March (LaPresse) – The United States will continue to support Ukraine, but Europe must be involved in the negotiations. This is the position expressed by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who reiterated Berlin’s confidence in Washington’s approach. “There is broad support for Ukraine across the US political spectrum,” said Wadephul at a press conference with his French counterpart Jean-Noël Barrot in Berlin, adding that he had “no doubt” that the US “will stick to its line and continue to support Kyiv”, despite a reduction in military aid. The head of German diplomacy emphasised that, at the same time, the European Union’s role is indispensable in the talks between Ukraine, Russia and the United States. “Europe must play a role, because European interests are at stake,” he declared. Among the issues on the table, Wadephul cited Ukraine’s accession to the EU and security guarantees, emphasising that “none of this can be discussed without Europe”. Hence the call for direct involvement: “It is clear that we must be included in the negotiations.” In his speech, the minister also referred to the broader security context, speaking of “two major crises, two wars on Europe’s doorstep”, and reiterating the central role of the Franco-German axis in the European diplomatic response.
