Rome, 28 March (LaPresse) – Off the coast of Greece, specifically near the island of Crete, a boat that had been adrift for days has been rescued. According to survivors’ accounts, 22 people lost their lives during the crossing. The news was reported by the Greek media outlet eKathimerini. The boat had set sail on the evening of 21 March from the Tobruk region in Libya and was heading for Greece. Preliminary investigations revealed that there were initially forty-eight people on board. During the journey, the passengers lost their bearings and remained at sea for six days without water or food. Twenty-two people lost their lives and their bodies were thrown into the sea on the orders of one of the traffickers. The migrants had paid sums of money amounting to 10,000 US dollars for their transport to Greece. Two South Sudanese nationals, aged 19 and 22, were arrested on suspicion of being the traffickers of the other passengers.
