Rome, 30 March (LaPresse/AP) – Two more UN peacekeepers were killed on Monday in southern Lebanon, according to UNIFIL. An explosion of “unknown origin” destroyed their vehicle near the village of Bani Hayyan and also injured two peacekeepers, one of whom is in a serious condition. All three peacekeepers killed were from the Indonesian army, said Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations. The first was killed when a base was struck by a projectile, UNIFIL added. Spokesperson Kandice Ardiel had previously stated that two of the injured peacekeepers could not be reached immediately due to a “lack of security guarantees” following the explosion.
