US: 7-month-old baby killed by a stray bullet in New York

New York (United States), 2 April (LaPresse/AP) – A seven-month-old baby girl has been killed by a stray bullet during a shooting in the Brooklyn neighbourhood of New York. According to the police, the baby was in her pram when two men on a scooter opened fire on a group of people on the pavement. Investigators believe the attack is linked to gang-related tensions and that the baby was hit accidentally. After the shooting, the two attackers fled but crashed into a car shortly afterwards: one was arrested in hospital, whilst the other is still at large. “There are no words to describe this family’s pain,” said Mayor Zohran Mamdani, describing the incident as “a tragedy that shocks the conscience”. The police have launched an investigation using CCTV footage from the area. The incident comes despite an overall decline in homicides in the city in 2026, but – as the authorities emphasise – it highlights that much remains to be done to tackle gun violence.
