Milan, 9 April (LaPresse/AP) – Commemorative ceremonies have begun in Iran to mark the 40th day since the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died aged 86 at the start of the Iran-Iraq War. In Tehran, participants dressed in black began their procession from Jomhouri Eslami Square to the neighbourhood where Khamenei’s office was located. Iranian state television has also broadcast similar commemorations in other cities. The broadcaster reports that the ceremonies will continue late into the night. Khamenei’s body has not yet been buried since his death on 28 February. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, now holds the office of Supreme Leader of Iran.
