Iran: agreement in principle reached to extend ceasefire

Rome, 15 Apr. (LaPresse/AP) – According to regional officials speaking to AP, mediators’ efforts to extend the ceasefire between the United States and Iran have made progress, and the warring parties are expected to return to the negotiating table soon for another round of talks. According to the officials, the mediators are aiming to extend the ceasefire, which expires on 22 April, for at least another two weeks, in order to give diplomacy further breathing space. Both sides have expressed an ‘agreement in principle’ to extend the ceasefire. One of the officials involved said that mediators are working on a compromise on the three main points of contention, including the nuclear programme, the Strait of Hormuz and war reparations. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity.
