Turin, 25 April (LaPresse) – Viktor Orbán will not take his seat in Parliament. The outgoing prime minister himself announced this on social media following a meeting of the Fidesz executive committee, during which all candidates were heard. “The mandate I secured as the lead candidate on the Fidesz-KDNP list represents a parliamentary seat for Fidesz, so I have decided to give it up. At this moment, what is needed is not my presence in Parliament, but my contribution to the reorganisation of the national political landscape,” said Orban, fresh from defeat in the Hungarian elections after 16 consecutive years as prime minister. “Next week we will hold a national party meeting and we have brought forward the renewal congress to June, originally scheduled for the autumn,” he added. “The executive committee proposes that I continue my work as president of Fidesz and, if the congress confirms its confidence in me, I am ready to accept the role,” concluded the outgoing prime minister.
