Brussels, 27 April (LaPresse) – "Since the start of the crisis in the Middle East, we have paid an extra €25 billion for gas and oil imports without receiving a single extra molecule of energy. We must reduce this dependence. And, conversely, we must increase the cheaper energy we produce here in Europe. This means that every kilowatt-hour of energy generated here contributes to economic stability, access to affordable energy and, therefore, to Europe’s independence.” This was stated by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, at a press conference following the meeting of the CDU/CSU executive committee at the German Bundestag. “Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in particular offer new prospects. Not only the United States and China, but also Japan, Canada, the United Kingdom and South Korea are conducting research and investing in these SMRs. For us, it is essential that the future path in the energy sector allows for technological neutrality. For this reason, the European Union is not only strongly promoting the expansion of renewable energy, batteries and modern grids, but is also investing in research into small modular reactors," she reiterated.
