Frankfurt (Germany), 5 May (LaPresse) – The man suspected of having run over and killed two people with a car in the centre of Leipzig had recently been receiving psychiatric treatment. This is reported by Bild. The 33-year-old, identified as Jeffrey K., a technical employee and resident of Leipzig, is said to have driven approximately 600 metres at high speed through the pedestrian zone in the city centre on Monday afternoon, hitting several passers-by. Two people died in the attack, a 77-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman, whilst others were injured. According to reports, the man had voluntarily admitted himself to a psychiatric facility the day before the incident. He was reportedly discharged on Sunday, apparently following an episode of aggressive behaviour towards other patients. It is unclear whether the clinic informed the police. The following day, the man allegedly used the car as a weapon, driving into the pedestrian zone at Augustusplatz and continuing at high speed until he was stopped by a bollard. Witnesses describe him as motionless and unresponsive at the time of his arrest. Following his arrest, the suspect was examined at hospital and deemed unfit for detention, and was subsequently transferred to a psychiatric facility. According to the authorities, no political motives have emerged at this stage, whilst the investigation is considering the possibility of a family dispute. The city centre remains cordoned off whilst investigations continue. The public prosecutor’s office is investigating two counts of murder and attempted murder in at least two other cases. A judge’s decision on pre-trial detention is expected shortly.
