Milan, May 9 (LaPresse) – Yesterday the Supreme Court of Virginia, in the United States, rejected the congressional redistricting plan presented by Democrats and approved by voters through a referendum. The Court ruled by 4 votes to 3 that the state government, led by Democrats, violated procedural requirements when it submitted the constitutional amendment authorizing the redrawing of electoral districts to a vote. Voters had approved the amendment by a narrow margin on April 21, but the Court’s ruling now renders the result meaningless. Writing for the majority, Judge D. Arthur Kelsey stated that the legislature submitted the proposed constitutional amendment to voters “in an unprecedented manner.” “This violation irreparably undermines the integrity of the resulting referendum vote and renders it void and of no effect,” he added. Democrats had hoped to gain up to four additional seats in the U.S. House of Representatives thanks to the new Virginia electoral map, in an effort to counter Republican redistricting elsewhere prompted by President Donald Trump. Late yesterday evening, Virginia Democrats announced in a statement that they intend to file an emergency appeal against the state Supreme Court’s decision to the U.S. Supreme Court. “Great win for the Republican Party, and for America, in Virginia,” Trump wrote about the decision in a post on his Truth social network.
