Washington (DC, US), 24 May (LaPresse/AP) – A man who opened fire near a White House security checkpoint on Saturday has died after being shot by officers who returned fire, according to the US Secret Service. This is the third shooting incident in the vicinity of President Donald Trump in the last month. The law enforcement agency stated in a press release published on X that the man was in the area between 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue when, shortly after midnight Italian time (6pm Washington time), he “pulled a gun from his bag” and began firing. Secret Service agents returned fire and struck the suspect, who died in hospital, the agency reported. The suspect has been identified as Nasire Best, 21, said a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss the investigation. According to District of Columbia court records, Best had been arrested in July 2025 after attempting to enter another White House checkpoint without authorisation, failing to comply with officers’ orders to stop, “claiming to be Jesus Christ” and saying he wanted to be arrested.
