Milan, 12 June (LaPresse/AP) – The artist David Hockney has died at the age of 88. His paintings of swimming pools glistening in the Los Angeles sun have become icons of 20th-century art. Hockney was born in the north of England but lived most of his life in southern California, making his sun-kissed suburban landscapes a recurring theme. In his later years, he returned to Europe, finding new inspiration in the wooded hills of his native Yorkshire and in the fields and trees of the French region of Normandy. He was one of the UK’s most celebrated artists, with works selling for record prices at auction. His agent announced his death, which occurred on Thursday.
