Rome, 5 May (LaPresse) – ‘At this moment, Marco Rubio is undoubtedly the Holy See’s most reliable interlocutor.’ So said Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller, Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, in an interview with *Corriere della Sera*. “The United States cannot be against the Pope and the Vatican; a compromise is necessary. It is also a matter of prudence: there are more than fifty million Catholics in the US who certainly did not appreciate the attacks on the Pope. Politicians must be more diplomatic, more reasonable,” he added. “Trump had, shall we say, an emotional reaction, but now he should look at things with greater rationality. The Church’s position is very clear in invoking the higher values of peace, beyond politics and above it. Of course, the US is a great democracy and a military power, and may feel it has a role to play in promoting peace, a responsibility to contain authoritarian and dangerous regimes. But the end, he emphasises, does not justify all means.”
