Genoa, 11 May (LaPresse) – ‘There is a significant difference compared to Covid: Hantavirus infection is less contagious but can be more aggressive. It can progress from initial flu-like symptoms to severe forms of interstitial pneumonia.’ This is according to Genoese infectious disease specialist Matteo Bassetti, director of the Infectious Diseases Unit at the San Martino Polyclinic. ‘All viruses,’ he continues, "can undergo mutations, and this virus has a long incubation period, but no alarm has been raised at present: we are simply keeping a close eye on the evolution of the epidemiological situation. The hospital, should the need arise, is equipped with high-security isolation rooms for the management of any clinical cases." Liguria confirms that the Regional Health Service is equipped to ensure timely diagnosis and safe clinical and care management, as well as a full commitment to monitoring the situation and protecting public health, ensuring a rapid, coordinated and effective response should the need arise.
