Genoa, 30 May (LaPresse) – “Monica is the sea, Giorgia is the sun”, and in the background a photo with a cobalt-blue sea behind it: next to the entrance to the church of San Francesco in Pegli, young people gather in silence – students of Monica Montefalcone, the University of Genoa lecturer who died in the tragic diving accident on 14 May in the Maldives alongside her daughter Giorgia Sommacal. A packed church, fellow students, colleagues, friends – today the western district of Genoa comes to a standstill for the funeral, officiated by the Bishop of Genoa, Marco Tasca. The coffins arrived here last night, at the local church which the Sommacal family had attended for years, the same church that hosted a prayer vigil and the rosary last night. Close to her father Carlo, her son from Montefalcone and Giorgia’s brother, and the young woman’s fiancé. Beside the coffins were wreaths from the University; the funeral was attended by long-standing colleagues of the lecturer from Distav, the Department of Earth Sciences where she worked.
