Rome, 12 December. (LaPresse) – ‘A leading member of the international community, the Russian Federation, has unfortunately chosen’ to restore ‘by force the anti-historical pursuit of spheres of influence, territorial conquest, and cruel military domination.’ These were the words of Italian President Sergio Mattarella during the end-of-year ceremony at the Quirinale Palace to exchange greetings with the diplomatic corps. "The global generations that fought against Nazi-Fascism in Europe, against colonialism, against totalitarianism to claim freedom and rights, often at the cost of their lives, seeking a project of collaboration that led to the creation of the UN – the most ambitious attempt in human history to provide a framework of rules for international relations – risk seeing their sacrifices shattered today. A system built to ensure peace and coexistence – reflecting long-discussed and negotiated balances – enters into crisis when some protagonists of international life break it, believing that it no longer serves their own interests, which are sometimes fickle, and that these interests must prevail over shared values and the needs of other countries. It enters into crisis when alleged – and often fallacious – security needs are invoked to alter the strategic balance," added Mattarella.
