Milan, 6 May (LaPresse) – Marianna Madia’s move to Italia Viva “is a significant political development. Given her background, Madia can help build a solid reformist movement. Obviously, that is not enough: we need ideas, organisation and consensus. But to defeat the centre-right, the left-wing alliance of the PD, the Five Star Movement and AVS is not enough. And to build a more reformist profile, people like Madia are invaluable.‘ This is what Italia Viva leader Matteo Renzi stated in an interview with Corriere della Sera. When asked whether Madia’s move would jeopardise relations with Elly Schlein, the former prime minister replied: ’No. Elly would have preferred Marianna to stay in the PD. But we march divided to strike united. Italia Viva wants to build a reformist coalition so that the centre-left can win the elections. Schlein understood this before many others in the PD, and I greatly appreciate her insight. Then again, anyone who leaves a party knows that leaving is like tearing off your own skin. Marianna knows it, I know it, and Elly knows it too, having made the same choice ten years ago. But anyone who does so for political conviction — and not for personal gain — deserves respect."
