Rome, 18 May (LaPresse) – ‘We had four candidates. It wasn’t just about Andrea. We assessed them across various criteria. One of the main reasons we chose Andrea is, first and foremost, that he has experience working with the national team and with clubs. He has worked as an assistant in three top-flight leagues. He has known the players for a long time. He has never lost touch with Ukraine.’ So said the president of the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF), Andriy Shevchenko, in presenting the national team’s new head coach, Andrea Maldera. “He has been in constant contact. He knows every player. He saw them when they were still very young, when they were playing for the youth national teams. Therefore, he has all the information. And then he took the step of moving to Ukraine. He has ambitions he wants to realise. It is very important to have an ambitious coach," he added. Italian coach Andrea Maldera has taken charge of the Ukrainian national football team following the sacking of Serhiy Rebrov. Maldera had previously worked with the national team as assistant to head coach Andriy Shevchenko, the current president of the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF).
