Milan, April 18 (LaPresse) – “This morning, a UNIFIL patrol engaged in clearing explosive devices along a road in the village of Ghanduriyah, in order to restore access to isolated UNIFIL positions, was targeted by small arms fire from non-state actors. Tragically, a peacekeeper died from his injuries and three others were wounded, two of them seriously.” This is stated in a note from the peacekeeping force of the UNIFIL deployed in southern Lebanon. “UNIFIL has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of this tragic incident. A preliminary assessment indicates that the fire came from non-state actors (presumably Hezbollah),” the statement continues. “UNIFIL calls on the Government of Lebanon to urgently launch an investigation to identify and bring to justice those responsible for crimes committed against UNIFIL peacekeepers.”
