London (United Kingdom), 13 May (LaPresse/AP) – King Charles III today presents the government’s legislative programme for the coming year to MPs, with all the solemnity that accompanies the opening of the British Parliament. However, it is not certain that Prime Minister Keir Starmer will still be in office to implement it and, even if he survives the latest government crisis, he may not have the authority needed to get his proposals approved by Parliament. The King’s Speech will be Starmer’s second attempt to save his premiership, following the heavy defeats suffered by the Labour Party in last week’s local and regional elections, which have weakened his already precarious position and fuelled calls for his resignation from some members of his own party, who believe Starmer has been too timid in tackling the rising cost of living, economic inequality and the shortcomings of the country’s public services.
