Rome, 16 May (LaPresse) – A massive tumour weighing around 10 kilograms, which had by then almost completely filled the patient’s abdomen and extended as far as the diaphragm, was successfully removed during an extremely delicate surgical procedure carried out by the team led by Professor Mario Polichetti at the “Tortorella” nursing home in Salerno. The patient, aged 43, presented with an extremely complex clinical picture, exacerbated by a previous neurosurgical operation for a cerebral meningioma, a factor that made both the anaesthetic management and the post-operative recovery particularly delicate. The tumour mass was compressing the abdominal organs, displacing the stomach and intestinal loops upwards, exerting significant pressure on the large retroperitoneal vessels and the urinary tract, with major repercussions on respiratory function as well.
