Rome, 22 Apr. (LaPresse) – To meet the target of bringing the deficit-to-GDP ratio below 3%, just 20 billion more in GDP than the 2,258 billion currently estimated by Istat for 2025 would have been sufficient. The paradox is that, for many years now, Istat’s initial figures have underestimated actual GDP, only to revise them upwards later. In all likelihood, this will also happen for 2025, proving to be a mockery for Italy and for Italians. And it is infuriating to note that, even taking the current Istat estimates at face value, we would still have been below the 3% deficit threshold if, even in 2025, the state coffers had not been burdened by the expenditure of billions of euros on the superbonus. ‘The ill-advised measure of the Conte II left-wing government is currently preventing Italy from exiting the infringement procedure, depriving the government of spending capacity that could have been allocated to public healthcare, education and support for those on the lowest incomes,’ writes Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on social media. ‘My thanks go to Minister Giorgetti and the entire government for having managed public resources responsibly during a very complicated period in history, bringing Italy great prestige and economic stability,’ she added.
