Rome, 18 May (LaPresse) – Russia supports any agreement between the United States and Iran but does not intend to interfere in the negotiation process between Washington and Tehran. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, according to reports by the Russian news agency Interfax. ‘We will support any resolution agreed and accepted by the negotiating parties themselves, in this case the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran,’ Lavrov said during a press conference. The minister added that Moscow ‘is not seeking to interfere in this negotiation process’. Lavrov emphasised that Russia could play a supporting role, recalling Moscow’s contribution to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. “President Putin, in his contacts with American and Israeli representatives, and when he recently hosted the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran in St Petersburg, stressed that we can play a constructive role if both sides are interested,” he said. “We played, I repeat, a very important and decisive role in determining the actions that would resolve the issue of enriched uranium on Iranian territory. We are ready to do so now,” Lavrov added.
