Rome, 15 June (LaPresse) – ‘It is with profound sorrow that we must share the saddest of news: today our beloved Taty Almeida, president of the Madres de Plaza de Mayo – Linea Fundadora, has passed away.’ The organisation itself posted this on its Instagram account, announcing the death of its president. Taty Almeida was 95 years old and was one of the leading figures of the human rights movement in Argentina, campaigning for the truth about the desaparecidos and calling for memory, truth and justice. She joined the Madres de Plaza de Mayo in 1979 to denounce the disappearance of her son, Alejandro Almeida, who was abducted on 17 June 1975 at the age of 20 and has been missing ever since.
