Rome, 8 May (LaPresse) – ‘Red Square is less important to us than the lives of the Ukrainian prisoners who can return home. For this reason, today, as part of the negotiation process mediated by the US, we have secured Russia’s agreement for a prisoner-of-war exchange of 1,000 for 1,000.’ Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote this on X, also confirming the ceasefire for 9, 10 and 11 May announced by Donald Trump. ‘I thank the President of the United States and his team for their effective diplomatic efforts. We expect the United States to ensure that the agreements are respected by the Russian side,’ added the leader in Kyiv who, in a statement published on the presidential website, ordered that Red Square in Moscow should not be targeted during the 9 May Victory Day parade. A decision taken “taking into account the numerous requests, on humanitarian grounds, made during negotiations with the American side on 8 May 2026”. “For the entire duration of the parade (from 10:00 Kyiv time on 9 May 2026), Red Square will be excluded from the operational plan for the use of Ukrainian weapons,” the decree states.
