Brussels, 19 May (LaPresse) – “In joyfully accepting this honour, I wish to reaffirm the Holy See’s willingness to work with the European institutions to promote the dignity of every human person and to be, together, artisans of peace for the benefit of our Europe and the whole world.” These were the words of the Holy See’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Perolin, who was awarded honorary membership of the European Order of Merit in Strasbourg. “Today,” he emphasised, “peace is under threat from many quarters and has also been wounded in Europe by the war in Ukraine. Nevertheless, it remains a fundamental promise of the European Union and a clear international commitment of the Holy See, as has been reiterated on numerous occasions by the Holy Father Leo XIV since his election. At the heart of our civil coexistence lie values rooted in the Christian history of Europe, of which the founding fathers were eloquent witnesses. Foremost among these is the affirmation of human dignity, which is inviolable and must always be protected at every stage of life.”
